Sunday 6 February 2022 | Rebuilding the family

Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

Theme: Back to basic – rebuilding the family

COLLECT
Holy God, your glory astounds us:
take us as we are, claim us for your purposes
and make us what you would have us be;
for Jesus Christ’s sake,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Loving Lord,
We thank you for your love so freely given to us all. We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers’ Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus’ name. Amen

READING from 2 Samuel 13
1 Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her.
2 And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her.
5 Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’”
6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.”
11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”
12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing.
13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”
14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!”

GOSPEL according to Luke 5: 1-11
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break.
10 Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”
11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

Prayer for Protection
Visit our homes and families, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace; and let your blessing be upon us always; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BENEDICTION
Go now, and forsaking everything else, follow Christ.
By the grace of God, be all you have been called to be, especially within you families, and cast wide the net of God’s love. Address the brokenness and dysfunction in honesty and with mercy for healing and wholeness.
Remind one another of the good news,
and hold firmly to faith that is saving you

The Blessing
And the blessing of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you always. Amen

COMMISSIONING/SENDING
Go in peace with courage, to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
